Solar Heating and Lighting Ideas for Your Home

Knowing when to install solar energy is a little bit like knowing when to replace a toilet, or furnace. Deciding to equip your home with solar energy to power things like lights and heating is an important to decision to make, so you want to take your time to think about all the different options. Moreover, you want to think about all the reasons why you want to install solar energy in your home. If you are doing it for the cost savings alone, that may not be enough justification. However, if you are installing solar energy in the hopes of saving money and shrinking your carbon footprint, perhaps you are a good candidate for this renewable and energy efficient way to power and heat your home. Here are some solar heating and lighting ideas for your home.

One of the most effective ways to utilize solar energy for lighting and heating your home is to use something called sun tubes. Sun tubes are relatively easy to install and they can be a great way to naturally illuminate a room in the daytime and provide warmth at night. Basically, sun tubes act a little bit like skylights, but they come in the form of an insulated tube, so you can utilize the warmth of the sun and the illumination at the same time.

Another way to use solar energy to heat your home is to install solar powered PV shingles on your roof. Basically, these shingles look just like your typical shingles, but they have individual photovoltaic cells, which absorb the sun’s UV rays and turn them into electricity. Now, you don’t have to install big, bulky panels on your roof that are reflective and ugly - you can simply make your entire roof an absorbent solar panel. While these panels can be pricey, there are many tax rebates that you can take advantage of, so that installation can be a bit more cost effective.

Next, you may want to use something called solar lightbulbs to light your home. While you can use solar bulbs inside, they are most effective outside. If you have a stairway that you would like to illuminate at night, or perhaps a deck or porch, using solar bulbs is an excellent, energy efficient option. Not only that, but solar bulbs don’t require lots of electrical installation – all you need is a few screws and some other tools.

Lastly, another great way to utilize solar energy for heating and warmth, is to use a solar powered hot water heater. These hot water heaters are interesting, because you can basically use the power of the sun to heat the water in your home. When it comes down to it, solar powered water heaters can be up to 70% more efficient than traditional water heaters. Plus, you won’t have to worry about losing hot water, because with a solar powered hot water heater – as long as there is a sun in the sky – you will always have hot water.
