What is coming and what is going can be handy information to have, especially if you are looking to remodel your kitchen before putting your property on the market to sell. Picky buyers are more likely to be interested in a property with a kitchen that is bang up to trend, and it will definitely add value to your property too.

So, let’s take a look at what the survey revealed:

1. Darker cabinetry

Sales of natural wood kitchen cabinets with darker finishes have overtaken sales of light natural wood cabinets. Black kitchen cabinets continue to be popular especially those with a high gloss. Whilst you may be tempted to invest in dark cabinets thinking they will be easier to keep clean, it is worth noting that high gloss cabinets in particular can be high maintenance as they to tend to show smudges and fingerprints, so probably not a good choice if you have children.

Looking at painted cabinetry, discount kitchen cabinets were still the most popular choice although current trends show that the distressed look is coming back into fashion.

The use of glass in countertops is still very much a niche market but recently glass backsplashes have been used by more than fifty percent of kitchen designers and rose to 52% this year (2012) compared to 41% last year. This comes in just behind natural stone which is also very popular.

3. Cherry takes a nose dive

Wonderfully warm looking and elegant, cherry wood cabinets have fallen from grace having regularly been first or second choice with designers alongside maple. Today’s designers are looking more at using oak and walnut and even bamboo (which technically aren’t a wood).

4. LED Lighting

Homes across America and Canada are widely embracing energy efficiency and even though the initial cost is higher than with other lighting, designers are using LED lighting more and more to reflect this fact. LED lighting which comes on when drawers and cabinets are opened is a fantastic way of helping consumers locates pots and utensils which can easily get lost in the depths of deep drawers and cabinets which are popular today. They are also really handy to use to shine down on counter tops.

5. Pull out Faucets

Stylish pull out faucets have established themselves as a mainstay in all modern kitchens and fit effortlessly into any style of kitchen. These versatile models also seem to be eradicating the need for pot filler faucets.

So there you have it, a few facts to mull over, before settling on your Kitchen Design Trends and Ideas 2013.
